Krasnodar Region Declares Emergency as Black Sea Oil Spill Affects 800 Square Kilometers; 1,250 Birds Rescued
Dec 25, 2024, 09:17 PM
The Russian government has declared a region-wide state of emergency in the Krasnodar region following an oil spill in the Black Sea. The spill, which occurred on December 15 due to the sinking of two aging tankers, has affected approximately 800 square kilometers of coastline. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin's spokesperson, described the situation as an ecological disaster and indicated that additional resources will be necessary for cleanup efforts. Local authorities reported that over 25 tons of oil-water mixture have been collected, and 27,900 square meters of the affected area have been treated with sorbents. Volunteers and rescue teams have been actively working to save wildlife, with reports indicating that more than 1,250 birds have been rescued in Anapa. Despite ongoing efforts, oil continues to wash up on the shores, prompting criticism of the authorities' response. The governor of Krasnodar, Veniamin Kondratiev, has requested federal assistance to address the situation, as the ecological impact of the spill continues to unfold.
