6.8 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southern Cuba, Felt in Florida, Jamaica, and Santiago
Nov 10, 2024, 06:20 PM
A series of earthquakes struck the southern coast of Cuba on Sunday, with the largest recorded at a magnitude of 6.8. The tremors were felt as far away as Florida, Jamaica, and Santiago. The first earthquake, measured at 6.0, occurred earlier in the day, followed by a 5.9 magnitude quake. The most significant quake hit at 11:49 AM ET, near Guantanamo Bay. The region has already been reeling from recent hurricanes and blackouts, exacerbating the damage and challenges faced by residents. Central Florida seismographs, including those near Disney, detected the tremors. Damage assessments are ongoing, and there have been calls to lift the U.S. blockade to aid in Cuba's recovery efforts.
