Trump Urges Putin Not to Escalate Ukraine War in First Post-Election Call, Highlights US Military Presence
Nov 10, 2024, 08:48 PM
US President-elect Donald Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, their first phone conversation since Trump's election victory. Conducted from his resort in Florida without State Department support, the call saw Trump advising Putin not to escalate the war in Ukraine and reminding him of Washington's sizable military presence in Europe, according to reports from the Washington Post. The two leaders discussed the goal of peace on the European continent, with Trump expressing interest in future talks to resolve the conflict. Meanwhile, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated that Moscow is ready to listen to Trump's proposals on settling the situation in Ukraine, but not those that would predict the defeat of Moscow. The Russian Foreign Ministry added that they would consider only plans that are not focused on increasing aid to Ukraine. Trump's team did not inform Kyiv about the conversation beforehand.
