Dec 21, 2024, 09:45 PM
Rickey Henderson, the Hall of Fame outfielder known as the 'Man of Steal' who holds Major League Baseball's all-time records for stolen bases and runs scored, has died at the age of 65. Henderson, widely regarded as one of the greatest leadoff hitters and base runners in baseball history, passed away after a bout with pneumonia, according to multiple reports. An Oakland native, Henderson played 25 seasons in the majors from 1979 to 2003, crossing four decades and playing for nine teams, including the Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, and Los Angeles Dodgers. He was a ten-time All-Star, won one Gold Glove and three Silver Slugger Awards, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009. Henderson is the only player in MLB history to steal over 1,000 bases, finishing his career with a record 1,406 stolen bases and 2,295 runs scored. He was known for his blazing speed and for redefining the role of the leadoff hitter, changing Major League Baseball with his style of play.
