Maia Sandu Wins Re-Election as Moldovan President with 53% Amid Russian Interference Allegations
Nov 3, 2024, 07:26 PM
Moldova held a tense presidential runoff election on Sunday, November 3rd, 2024, amid allegations of Russian interference. Over 2.7 million voters were registered, with 38 overseas polling stations and 2,400 observers monitoring the election. Incumbent President Maia Sandu, a pro-European Union leader, faced former Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo, who is considered pro-Russian. Authorities reported 'massive interference' by Russia, including potential bomb threats at polling stations abroad, organized transport of voters from Russia, and a 'large-scale vote-buying scheme.' Early results showed Stoianoglo leading with 51.93% of the votes with 76% counted, but as ballots from the diaspora were counted, Sandu overtook him after 92.2% of votes tallied. With over 95% of votes counted, Sandu led with approximately 53%, putting her on course for re-election. The election is seen as pivotal for Moldova's future direction, with Sandu advocating for EU integration and Stoianoglo favoring closer ties with Russia.
