WHO Identifies Top 17 Endemic Pathogens Needing Urgent Vaccine Development, Study Involves Bell and Brown
Nov 5, 2024, 11:32 AM
A recent study by the World Health Organization (WHO) has identified the top 17 endemic pathogens that regularly cause diseases in communities and for which new vaccines are urgently needed. This study, which involved researchers including David Bell and Garrett Brown, is the first global effort to systematically prioritize endemic pathogens based on criteria such as regional disease burden, antimicrobial resistance risk, and socio-economic impact. The findings reconfirm longstanding priorities for vaccine research and development. The study is seen as complementary to the WHO's R&D blueprint, which lists priority vaccines for emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.
