Stonehenge Altar Stone Traveled 450 Miles from Scotland
Aug 14, 2024, 03:30 PM
New research has revealed that the Altar Stone at the heart of Stonehenge, a six-tonne megalith, originated from Scotland rather than Wales, as previously believed. This discovery challenges long-held assumptions about the origins of the stones used in the iconic prehistoric monument. The study utilized chemical fingerprinting to trace the stone's origins to the Orcadian Basin in northeast Scotland, suggesting that ancient builders transported it over 450 miles (approximately 800 kilometers) to its current location in Wiltshire. This finding implies that Neolithic societies may have had more advanced transportation methods than previously thought, potentially indicating the existence of long-distance trade networks during that era.
