UK Boy Oran Knowlson First to Receive Epilepsy Device Reducing Seizures by 80%
Jun 24, 2024, 01:02 PM
A boy from Somerset with severe epilepsy has become the first patient in the world to trial a new device fitted in his skull to control seizures. The neurostimulator, implanted at Great Ormond Street Hospital in October 2023 when British teen Oran Knowlson was 12 years old, has reduced his daytime seizures by 80% over eight months. Professor Tim Denison from the University of Oxford, the lead engineer behind the device, explained how the technology works. The device transmits electrical signals deep into the brain to control the seizures.
