New York State Appeals Court Rules Trump Can Sue Niece Over NY Times Article
May 30, 2024, 09:27 PM
A New York state appeals court has ruled that former President Donald J. Trump can proceed with a lawsuit against his niece, Mary Trump, for her role in providing information to the New York Times. The information was used in a Pulitzer Prize-winning 2018 investigation into Trump's finances and his alleged efforts to avoid taxes. The Manhattan court found a 'substantial' legal basis for Trump to claim that his niece violated confidentiality provisions of a 2001 settlement. The ruling was made on Thursday. Trump's attorney, Alina Habba, reacted to the ruling, emphasizing the legal grounds for the lawsuit. Former President Trump’s attorney Will Scharf stated that every aspect of the case is ripe for appeal and they will seek expedited review.
