VisitRapidus to Begin Test Production of 2nm Chips in April 2025, Aiming for Broadcom Partnership After ¥920 Billion Investment
Jan 8, 2025, 09:58 AM
Japan's state-backed semiconductor company, Rapidus, is set to begin test production of cutting-edge 2-nanometer (2nm) chips in April 2025. This initiative aims to showcase its capabilities to potential clients, including Broadcom, with whom it is in discussions for collaboration. Rapidus has already invested approximately ¥920 billion (US$5.84 billion) in the project, which is critical for its strategy to mass-produce 2nm chips by 2027. The company plans to deliver prototype chips to Broadcom as early as June 2025, as it seeks to secure contracts with 30 to 40 potential clients. Any delays in the production timeline could pose challenges for Rapidus in achieving its ambitious goals.
