UK Government Announces £10bn Compensation Scheme for Infected Blood Scandal Victims, £210,000 Interim Payments by End of Year
May 21, 2024, 11:58 AM
The UK government has announced a comprehensive compensation scheme for the victims of the infected blood scandal, which saw tens of thousands of people, including 30,000 who contracted HIV and hepatitis C, from contaminated blood or blood products. Following a public inquiry that reported evidence of a cover-up by the British establishment, victims could receive up to £10 billion in total compensation, with individual payments potentially reaching £2.5 million. Interim payments of £210,000 will be made to those most urgently in need by the end of the year. Paymaster General and Cabinet Office Minister John Glen confirmed that final payments will commence before the end of the year, and loved ones of the victims will also be eligible for compensation.
