The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed its first chargesheet against Sanjay Roy (also spelled Sanjoy Roy), accusing him of raping and murdering a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Roy, identified as a civic volunteer with the Kolkata police, is charged as the sole accused in the case, ruling out earlier speculations of gang rape. The incident, which occurred on August 9, ignited widespread outrage and led to a prolonged strike by junior doctors. The chargesheet, filed at the Sealdah court on October 7, alleges that Roy committed the crime while in an inebriated condition. The investigation into the rape and murder is ongoing.
