Just Stop Oil Activists Arrested for Spraying Stonehenge with Orange Powder Paint on Eve of Summer Solstice
Jun 19, 2024, 12:24 PM
Two activists from the environmental group Just Stop Oil have sprayed orange powder paint on Stonehenge, a prehistoric monument in England, on the eve of the Summer Solstice. The activists, identified as Niamh Lynch, 21, and Rajan Naidu, 73, were protesting to demand that the incoming government sign a legally binding treaty to phase out fossil fuels by 2030. The incident has led to their arrest by Wiltshire Police on suspicion of criminal damage. The act has sparked widespread condemnation, including from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who called it a 'disgraceful act of vandalism.' Stonehenge, a world heritage site, is protected under the Ancient Monuments Act, making it a criminal offense to damage the stones.
