Social Security to Expand Benefits for SNAP Recipients
May 10, 2024, 03:30 PM
The Social Security Administration (SSA) is set to implement significant changes to its rules, aimed at expanding access to benefits for millions of Americans. These upcoming changes will make it easier for beneficiaries to access certain benefits and increase the payments some may receive. Specifically, the new rules will allow more Americans who qualify for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits to also qualify for Social Security benefits. Currently, Social Security Income (SSI) benefits reach about 7 million recipients, and with the new changes, this could expand to include those among the approximately 42 million SNAP recipients. This overhaul comes just a month before a major election, highlighting the SSA's role as an independent agency within the Executive branch.
