Biden Forgives $4.5 Billion More in Student Debt, Relief for Public Workers Tops 1 Million
Oct 17, 2024, 12:06 PM
President Joe Biden's administration has canceled an additional $4.5 billion in student debt for over 60,000 public service workers, bringing the total number of public servants who have received relief under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program to over 1 million. Prior to the program's updates two years ago, only 7,000 public workers had been approved for forgiveness. This latest forgiveness is part of the PSLF program, which has now erased $74 billion in loans for public workers. Vice President Kamala Harris noted, "Our Administration has forgiven over $170 billion in student debt for nearly five million people throughout the country—more than any administration in history." In total, the Biden administration has approved approximately $175 billion in student debt relief for nearly 5 million borrowers since taking office. The announcement comes as the election nears.
