VisitArizona Abortion Opponents Sue to Block Prop 139 Ballot Initiative
Jul 26, 2024, 06:20 PM
Abortion opponents in Arizona have filed a lawsuit to block a ballot initiative, Prop 139, that seeks to enshrine the right to abortion in the state constitution. The legal challenge claims that the wording of the proposal is misleading and that some petition circulators did not comply with state law. A judge recently ruled in favor of the campaign behind the abortion rights petition, ordering the removal of the term 'unborn human being' from the legislative summary of the proposal. The judge also rejected the argument by GOP lawmakers that the term met the requirement for an impartial description, calling it 'partisan.' Representative Ben Toma has vowed to appeal the decision.
