Russian energy company Gazprom has announced it will halt natural gas supplies to Moldova starting at 8:00 a.m. Moscow time on January 1, 2025. The decision comes in response to unpaid debts owed by Moldovagaz, the state-owned gas company of Moldova. Gazprom has cited violations of contract obligations as the reason for the suspension of gas exports. The company had previously warned that gas supply could be interrupted as early as December 28 if Russian supplies were halted. The situation raises concerns about Moldova's energy security as it relies heavily on Russian gas imports.
