Protests Erupt in Sukhumi, Abkhazia Over Russian Investment Agreement as Parliament Session Postponed
Nov 15, 2024, 10:36 AM
Protests have erupted in the breakaway region of Abkhazia, Georgia, against a controversial investment agreement with Russia. The agreement, which critics argue disadvantages local businesses and threatens Abkhazia's economic and security interests, has led to significant unrest. On November 15, the Abkhaz parliament was set to debate the ratification of the agreement, but the session was postponed after lawmakers failed to agree on the agenda. Protesters in the capital, Sukhumi, breached the perimeter fence of the parliament building, clashing with police and military forces. Security forces deployed tear gas against the demonstrators, who managed to storm the parliament grounds. The protests have been ongoing for a week, with opposition members and broader society viewing the agreement as detrimental. The situation remains tense as the opposition continues to demand the rejection of the agreement. Five activists opposing the treaty were detained and held by security services. Protesters also threw tear gas grenades back at police.
