Bangladesh to End Mobile Internet Shutdown After Protests Result in 147 Deaths
Jul 28, 2024, 05:53 AM
Bangladesh is set to end a nationwide mobile internet shutdown that has isolated citizens and disrupted businesses. The shutdown, imposed on July 18 following violent clashes during student-led protests, resulted in at least 147 deaths. The blackout has placed immense stress on small enterprises crucial to the country's economy. Telecommunications Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak announced that mobile internet services will be restored more than a week after the initial blackout. Md. Rakibul Ahsan, who was finishing a logo for a foreign client, was one of many affected by the outage. The partial lifting of the communications blackout last week revealed a digital yearbook of those who died during the unrest.
