FBI Disrupts Chinese Hacking Group 'Flax Typhoon,' Compromising 260,000 Devices
Sep 18, 2024, 07:00 PM
The FBI has disrupted a second major Chinese hacking group known as 'Flax Typhoon,' which compromised over 260,000 Internet of Things (IoT) devices. FBI Director Christopher Wray announced at the Aspen Cyber Summit that the group was run by a company posing as an IT firm but was actually collecting intelligence for Chinese state agencies. The botnet, consisting of hundreds of thousands of compromised devices, targeted critical infrastructure in the U.S. and abroad, including routers and firewalls. The court-authorized operation was a joint effort involving the FBI, NSA, and other U.S. government agencies. The FBI has urged users to follow recommended mitigations to secure their devices and shrink the botnet.
