Fresh Violence in Manipur Leaves 12 Dead Amid Rocket and Drone Attacks; Protests Erupt, CM Demands Unified Command Control
Sep 9, 2024, 06:48 AM
Fresh violence has erupted in Manipur, leading to the deaths of at least 12 people. The violence, which has been ongoing for 16 months, intensified with recent rocket and drone attacks. Six people were killed in Jiribam, and another six in other districts, including Koutruk Village in Imphal West. The attacks, attributed to Kuki militants, have targeted Hindu Meitei-dominated areas, leading to significant destruction, including the former Chief Minister's residence. Bunkers have been destroyed, and choppers are on patrol. In response, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has called for an urgent meeting, briefed the Governor, and submitted a memorandum demanding unified command control. Protests have erupted across the state, with students and other groups demanding the resignation of top officials and the removal of the Director General of Police. The administration has closed all schools and colleges and deployed anti-drone systems to curb the violence.
