Malaysia to Continue Oil and Gas Exploration in South China Sea Despite China's Protests
Sep 4, 2024, 09:22 PM
Malaysia has announced it will continue its oil and gas exploration activities in the South China Sea despite protests from China. The announcement comes amid heightened tensions following the leak of a classified diplomatic note from China, which expressed strong dissatisfaction with Malaysia's activities in the region. Malaysia's Foreign Ministry has expressed grave concern over the leak and has initiated an internal investigation, as well as filing a police report to enable further investigation by relevant authorities. The diplomatic note, issued by Beijing on February 18, warned Malaysia to cease its activities in the oil-rich waters off Sarawak. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reiterated on March 4 that the country will not halt its exploration efforts, emphasizing Malaysia's sovereign rights in the South China Sea.
