South Carolina Executes Richard Moore Despite Racial Bias Claims and Pleas for Mercy
Nov 1, 2024, 10:40 PM
The U.S. Supreme Court has denied Richard Moore's application to stay his death sentence, allowing South Carolina to proceed with his execution. Richard Bernard Moore, convicted for the 1999 fatal shooting of a convenience store clerk, claimed racial discrimination in jury selection, but his appeal was rejected. Despite pleas for mercy from jurors, a judge, and the former prison director, Governor Henry McMaster did not grant clemency. Moore, a Black inmate, was executed by lethal injection on Friday. His case drew significant attention due to the racial bias claims and the fact that he was convicted by an all-white jury. Moore was the second death row inmate executed by the state this year.
