At Least 38 Dead, 29 Injured as Gunmen Attack Shia Passenger Vehicles in Pakistan's Lower Kurram District
Nov 21, 2024, 08:59 AM
At least 38 people were killed and 29 injured when gunmen opened fire on passenger vehicles in Pakistan's northwestern Lower Kurram district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, on Thursday. The attack occurred in the Kurram tribal district, where multiple vehicles carrying Shia Muslim civilians were targeted. Among the victims were women and children. The death toll, initially reported as eight, has risen sharply, and officials fear it may increase further. The incident marks one of the deadliest attacks in the region in recent years, highlighting the ongoing sectarian tensions between Sunni and Shia communities. Local officials, including the chief secretary of the province, Nadeem Aslam Chaudhry, confirmed the casualties. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. The region has been marred by violence, with major roads cut off.
