Biden Extends DED Program for Hong Kongers, Offering Two-Year Stay and Work Permits
Jan 16, 2025, 07:14 AM
President Joe Biden has extended and expanded the Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) program for Hong Kong residents in the United States, allowing them to remain in the country for an additional two years. This decision comes as a response to the ongoing erosion of rights and freedoms in Hong Kong by the Chinese government, including the sentencing of 45 pro-democracy advocates, the issuance of arrest warrants targeting overseas activists, and the cancellation of passports for some Hong Kongers. The extension, which was set to expire on February 5, 2025, now covers Hong Kongers who were not previously eligible, offering them protection from deportation and the opportunity to obtain work permits. This move is seen as a significant gesture of support for democracy and human rights in Hong Kong, amidst tensions between Beijing and Washington.
