Norway Bolsters Ukraine's Navy with $242M to Counter Russian Threats in Black Sea
Dec 16, 2024, 11:44 AM
Norway has committed to providing $242 million to bolster Ukraine's naval capabilities, aimed at countering Russian forces in the Black Sea. This financial support will be channeled through the Nansen Support Program, Norway's initiative for civil and military aid to Ukraine. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre emphasized the importance of protecting Ukraine's population, infrastructure, and grain exports from Russian attacks by the Black Sea Fleet. The funds will enhance Ukraine's ability to detect and defuse mines along its coastline, as well as support maritime training and other measures in 2025. Norway's Defense Minister, Bjorn Arild Gram, highlighted the significance of the support for mine clearance operations. This move comes as part of a broader effort by Norway and the UK to make the Ukrainian Navy more compatible with Western allies through the Maritime Capabilities Coalition.
