Warren Upton, Last USS Utah Survivor and Oldest Pearl Harbor Veteran, Dies at 105 on Christmas Day

Warren Upton, a San Jose resident and the oldest living survivor of the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the last remaining survivor of the USS Utah, has died at the age of 105. Upton passed away on Christmas Day at a hospital in Los Gatos, California, due to pneumonia. He was 22 years old and serving as a radioman aboard the USS Utah when it was hit by torpedoes during the attack that propelled the United States into World War II. Upton recounted being ready to shave when the first torpedo struck, and after the ship began to capsize, he swam to Ford Island for safety. His death was confirmed by Kathleen Farley, the California state chair of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors. With Upton's passing, only 15 Pearl Harbor survivors remain alive.
