Sweden Sends 550 Troops to Latvia in Largest NATO Deployment Under Canadian-Led Brigade
Jan 18, 2025, 03:04 PM
Sweden has deployed a mechanized infantry battalion of 550 troops to Latvia as part of NATO's Multinational Brigade, marking its first NATO mission since joining the alliance in March 2024. The Swedish battalion, from the South Skåne Regiment, arrived in Riga, escorted by the Swedish Air Force and Latvian Navy, and will be stationed at Camp Valdemar near Adazi. This deployment, Sweden's largest with NATO to date, is part of the alliance's efforts to strengthen collective defense and deterrence along its eastern flank amid heightened tensions in the Baltic region due to Russia's actions. The battalion joins one of eight NATO brigades and will operate under a Canadian-led command. The mission is expected to last six months and includes joint exercises with allied forces. Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson described the deployment as a historic milestone for Sweden, emphasizing its commitment to regional security and NATO's collective defense. Commander Henrik Rosdahl expressed pride in contributing to the alliance's efforts.
