Biden Administration to Ease Humanitarian Aid Restrictions for Syria on Monday, Aiding New Government
Jan 6, 2025, 06:06 AM
The Biden administration is set to announce on Monday a limited easing of restrictions on humanitarian aid to Syria, aimed at speeding up the delivery of essential supplies such as water, electricity, and other humanitarian goods. This move, reported by the Wall Street Journal, does not lift the broader sanctions that restrict other forms of assistance to the new government in Damascus. The U.S. Treasury Department has been authorized to issue waivers to aid groups and companies involved in providing these essential services. The decision comes in the wake of President Bashar al-Assad's downfall, with the intention to support the new government led by a coalition of opposition groups.
