Somalia, Ethiopia Agree on Maritime Access, Territorial Integrity in Turkey-Brokered Deal
Dec 12, 2024, 11:45 AM
Somalia and Ethiopia have reached a historic agreement in Ankara, mediated by Turkey, to resolve their longstanding dispute over maritime access and territorial integrity. The agreement, known as the Ankara Declaration, was announced by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to each other's sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity, adhering to international law and the principles of the United Nations and the African Union. The declaration outlines plans for technical negotiations to commence by February 2025, facilitated by Turkey, aiming to conclude within four months. These negotiations will focus on mutually beneficial commercial arrangements, allowing Ethiopia reliable and sustainable access to the sea under Somalia's sovereignty. The agreement also acknowledges the sacrifices of Ethiopian soldiers in African Union missions and emphasizes the potential benefits of Ethiopia's sea access for both nations. The European Union and the African Union have welcomed the deal, recognizing Turkey's significant role in the mediation process. This agreement is seen as a step towards peace, stability, and economic cooperation in the Horn of Africa region.
