Ex-Ivy League Student Arrested in Pennsylvania in UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson's Murder
Dec 9, 2024, 06:59 PM
Police have identified 26-year-old Luigi Mangione as a person of interest in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last week in Midtown Manhattan. Mangione, an ex-Ivy League student and tech whiz from Maryland who completed a master's degree in engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, was taken into custody Monday at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after being recognized by an employee. New York City Mayor Adams described Mangione as a "strong" person of interest in the case. Authorities say Mangione is an anti-capitalist and climate activist who had expressed anger towards the medical community and had liked online quotes from Ted Kaczynski, the "Unabomber". He was found with a fake ID and the suspected murder weapon in his possession. He has yet to be charged.
