Denmark Frees Sea Shepherd Founder Paul Watson After 149 Days, Rejects Japan Extradition
Dec 17, 2024, 12:20 PM
Paul Watson, the founder of Sea Shepherd and a prominent anti-whaling activist, has been released after 149 days of detention in Greenland, following Denmark's decision not to extradite him to Japan. Watson had been imprisoned since July 21 due to a Japanese extradition request related to a 2010 clash in the Antarctic Ocean involving damages and injuries on a Japanese whaling vessel. The Danish government's refusal allows him to return to France, where he lives with his wife and two young children, just before Christmas. The decision was confirmed by his lawyer and welcomed by French Environment Minister Agnès Runacher. Watson expressed relief at being able to reunite with his family for the holidays.
