A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Kamchatka, Russia, on 17.08.2024, with varying reports on its magnitude. The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a 7.2 magnitude quake occurring 107 km east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a depth of 51 km. Initial reports suggested a 7.4 magnitude, while the US Geological Survey (USGS) noted a 7.0 magnitude. Despite the strength of the tremor, authorities have stated there is no tsunami threat.
