South Korean Parliament Unanimously Impeaches Acting President Han Duck-soo; Finance Minister Choi Takes Over
Dec 26, 2024, 12:50 PM
South Korea's main opposition Democratic Party submitted an impeachment motion against Acting President and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who has been in office for less than two weeks. The motion was filed due to Han's refusal to appoint three judges to the Constitutional Court necessary to complete the impeachment process of suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was impeached after declaring a short-lived martial law on December 3. On Friday, December 27, in a unanimous 192-0 vote, the South Korean parliament voted to impeach Acting President Han Duck-soo. Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok has become the new acting president. The impeachment could deepen the country's ongoing political crisis.
