San Francisco's Taxpayer-Funded $5M Program Manages Homeless Alcoholics' Drinking
May 11, 2024, 02:13 PM
San Francisco has launched a $5 million program aimed at managing alcohol consumption among homeless alcoholics. The initiative, funded by taxpayer money, provides participants with housing, meals, activities, and a controlled quantity of alcoholic beverages, including 1-2 drinks of either 1.7 ounces of vodka, 5 oz of wine, or 12 oz of beer up to four times a day. The alcohol is served by nurses, with the amount based on the individual's 'need and desire' and no expectation to reduce consumption. The program also includes crafts and outings to Giants games, and is part of a broader approach to improve participants' health.
