Haiti's Gang Leader Monel Félix Orders Massacre of 184 in Port-au-Prince Over Witchcraft Claims
Dec 10, 2024, 08:29 AM
Over the weekend, gang leader Monel Félix ordered the massacre of at least 184 people in Wharf Jérémie, a neighborhood in Cité Soleil, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The victims, predominantly elderly individuals and voodoo practitioners, were accused of using witchcraft to cause the illness and death of Félix's son, following advice from a voodoo priest. Reports indicate that many of the victims were mutilated and burned in the streets. The Haitian government condemned the killings, describing them as a massacre of "unbearable cruelty." The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres denounced the continued gang violence and loss of life in Haiti, calling for a thorough investigation. The UN reports that over 5,000 Haitians have been killed this year amid escalating gang violence.
