India, China to Resume Pre-2020 LAC Patrols Ahead of BRICS Summit
Oct 21, 2024, 10:24 AM
On October 21, 2024, India and China reached a significant agreement to resume patrolling along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, including the sensitive regions of Depsang Plains and Demchok. This development marks a major step toward resolving the border standoff that escalated following the Galwan clash in 2020. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced that diplomatic and military negotiators from both countries have been in close contact over the past several weeks, leading to this agreement on new patrolling arrangements. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed that both sides will return to pre-2020 patrolling protocols at the LAC and expressed optimism about this positive step. The agreement comes ahead of the upcoming BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, where both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to attend.
