Japanese Startup Achieves First Genetically Modified Pig Kidney Transplant in Macaque for Clinical Application
Nov 25, 2024, 06:37 AM
A Japanese startup, PorMedTec, has successfully transplanted a genetically modified pig kidney into a crab-eating macaque, marking the first such procedure in Japan. This domestic first experiment aims to address the shortage of transplant organs and move towards clinical trials in humans. The kidney was modified to prevent rejection, and the macaque was able to urinate post-transplantation. The success of this experiment, conducted in collaboration with a university, is seen as a step towards establishing xenotransplantation technology for kidney disease patients.
