Pentagon Fails Seventh Audit, Unable to Account for $824 Billion Budget, Aims for Clean Audit by 2028
Nov 16, 2024, 06:19 PM
The Pentagon, the nation's largest government agency, has failed its seventh consecutive financial audit, unable to fully account for its $824 billion budget. Despite deploying 1,700 auditors for the financial inspection, the Department of Defense failed to provide sufficient information to form an accurate opinion. Officials emphasize that progress is being made, aiming for a clean audit by 2028. The Pentagon has never passed an audit since it became a legal requirement in 2018. Of its agencies, nine earned clean opinions, while fifteen received disclaimers, with the rest pending. Officials note that 82% of the department's funding is now free of major errors, an improvement from 7% in 2021.
