NFL Ordered to Pay $4.7 Billion to Fans, $96 Million to Bars in Sunday Ticket Antitrust Case

A federal jury in California has ruled that the National Football League (NFL) violated antitrust laws with its Sunday Ticket broadcast package. The jury has ordered the NFL to pay $96 million in damages to commercial establishments and $4.7 billion to residential subscribers, including 2.4 million subscribers. Under federal antitrust laws, these damages could be tripled, potentially bringing the total to over $14 billion. The lawsuit, originally filed nine years ago, claimed that the NFL conspired with DirecTV to inflate prices. The NFL has expressed disappointment with the verdict and plans to appeal the decision. Post-trial motions will be heard on July 31, and the case may eventually reach the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
