Macron Dissolves Parliament After Le Pen's 32%-33% Victory in EU Vote; New Elections June 30, July 7
Jun 9, 2024, 07:03 PM
French President Emmanuel Macron's centrist group suffered a significant defeat in the European Parliament elections on Sunday, with Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally party securing a decisive victory. Exit polls indicate Le Pen's party garnered around 32%-33% of the vote, while Macron's group received only 15%-16%. This outcome marks Macron's worst-ever performance in European elections. In response to the defeat, Macron announced the dissolution of the French parliament and called for new legislative elections scheduled for June 30 and July 7. The results also reflect a broader trend across Europe, with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's socialist coalition being routed by conservative and far-right parties, including the Alternative for Germany (AfD) which secured 16.5% of the vote, SPD 14%, and Greens 12%. Spain's opposition conservatives also lead in the EU vote.
