Israeli Fans Attacked in Amsterdam After Ajax Match; 12 Injured, 62 Arrested
Nov 8, 2024, 07:14 AM
Following a Europa League match on Thursday evening between Ajax Amsterdam and Maccabi Tel Aviv, Israeli soccer fans were subjected to violent attacks in Amsterdam. Groups of assailants, believed to have premeditated the attacks, reportedly ambushed the fans in various locations throughout the city, with some attackers shouting 'Free Palestine' and chanting anti-Israel slogans. The assaults resulted in at least 12 reported injuries, some of which were serious. Five people were hospitalized, and contact was lost with at least two Israelis. Fans sought refuge in nearby hotels as police struggled to control the chaos, and attackers even stormed some hotels where fans were staying. Amsterdam authorities confirmed that antisemitic rioters 'actively sought out Israeli supporters to attack and assault them,' and 62 people were arrested in connection with the violence. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directed that two rescue planes be sent to the Netherlands to assist Israeli citizens, stating that 'the harsh pictures of the assault on our citizens will not be overlooked.' The Israeli military announced preparations for a rescue mission, including medical and rescue teams, in coordination with the Dutch government. The incidents have been compared to a 'pogrom,' with some drawing parallels to Kristallnacht.
