Japanese Town Blocks Mount Fuji View with Black Screen; Holes Poked by Tourists
May 28, 2024, 05:45 AM
A Japanese town has installed a black mesh screen to block the view of Mount Fuji in an effort to deter unruly, photo-taking tourists. The barrier, erected in Fujikawaguchiko town a week ago, aims to address issues of littering, trespassing, and traffic violations caused by the influx of visitors. However, despite the recent installation, around 10 small holes have already been poked into the screen by sightseers. The decision to put up the screen comes amid a broader debate in Japan about the limits of its hospitality, exacerbated by a tourism boom driven by the weak yen. The town officials have stated that the screen was the only option to ensure tourist safety and maintain order.
