FTC Sues to Block $24.6B Grocery and $8.5B Tapestry-Capri Mergers
Apr 23, 2024, 01:00 AM
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has initiated legal action to block two significant mergers in the grocery and luxury goods sectors. The FTC is suing to prevent a $24.6 billion merger between major grocery chains, citing concerns over reduced competition and potential price increases for consumers. Concurrently, the FTC is also attempting to block Tapestry's $8.5 billion acquisition of Capri Holdings, arguing that the merger would eliminate competition between luxury brands such as Coach, Kate Spade, and Michael Kors, potentially leading to higher prices in the 'affordable luxury' market. The lawsuits were filed in February.
