Amethi Murders After 'Five Will Die' Threat; Suspect Chandan Verma Injured in Escape Attempt
Oct 5, 2024, 03:27 AM
In Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, a village head's son and his family members were killed in a violent incident rooted in a land dispute and personal grievances. The primary suspect, Chandan Verma, allegedly murdered the family following a dispute believed to stem from an illicit relationship with the victim's wife, Poonam, which had been ongoing for 1.5 years. Prior to the attack, the slain family had filed complaints against Verma under the SC/ST Act and for eve-teasing, and had alleged police inaction. Verma reportedly issued a chilling warning stating, "Five will die," before carrying out the murders. The victim's father demanded justice, stating, "My son was shot dead, his killer must go same way." Verma was apprehended by police but was injured in an encounter after allegedly attempting to escape by snatching a firearm during interrogation.
