EU Charges Apple and Microsoft with Breaching Digital Markets Act
Jun 24, 2024, 07:47 AM
The European Union has initiated multiple actions against Apple, alleging that the company's App Store rules breach the Digital Markets Act (DMA). EU regulators have charged Apple with failing to comply with new digital competition laws, citing that the App Store's anti-steering rules prevent app developers from directing consumers to alternative purchase options. Additionally, the EU is investigating Apple's new contractual requirements for third-party app developers and app stores. Commissioner Thierry Breton emphasized that the EU will take further action to ensure Apple's compliance with the DMA, accusing the company of squeezing out innovative companies and denying consumers new opportunities and choices. The EU also plans to charge Microsoft on suspicions of taking advantage of its market dominance and is enforcing data sharing regulations under the DMA.
