Sweden Urges Chinese Ship to Return for Undersea Cable Investigation

Swedish authorities have requested that the Chinese vessel Yi Peng 3, suspected of involvement in the damage to undersea fiber-optic cables in the Baltic Sea, move into Swedish waters to facilitate an investigation. The cables, which connect Germany, Finland, Sweden, and Lithuania, were severed, leading to suspicions of sabotage. The Yi Peng 3 was in the vicinity when the cables were damaged, prompting a multi-national response. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasized the need for the ship's crew to cooperate with the investigation. Several government ships are now staying near the Chinese vessel, and negotiations are underway between Denmark, Sweden, and China to allow the Yi Peng 3 to be examined and its crew potentially interrogated.
