Supreme Court Rejects BJP Plea Against Calcutta HC Order on Anti-TMC Ads During Lok Sabha Polls
May 27, 2024, 07:04 AM
The Supreme Court of India has refused to entertain the BJP's plea against a Calcutta High Court order that restrained the party from publishing advertisements deemed derogatory and offensive against the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The Calcutta High Court's decision, issued on May 20 by a single-judge bench, found that the BJP's advertisements violated the poll code and contained allegations against the TMC, portraying it as corrupt and anti-Hindu. The Supreme Court, on May 24, emphasized that degenerating debates during the Lok Sabha elections would harm voters' interests and found the BJP's four advertisements to be prima facie disparaging. The Court also stated, 'Rival Not Enemy.'
