UN Chief Condemns Israeli Airstrikes on Yemen's Sana'a Airport, Red Sea Ports, and Power Stations, Citing Casualties
Dec 26, 2024, 10:28 PM
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned the escalation of tensions between Israel and Yemen, particularly highlighting the alarming nature of Israeli airstrikes on Sana'a International Airport, Red Sea ports, and power stations in Yemen. The airstrikes, which occurred on Thursday, resulted in numerous casualties, with reports indicating at least six people were killed and dozens injured. A member of the UN Humanitarian Air Service crew was also injured during the attack on the airport. Guterres expressed deep concern over the risk of further regional escalation and called for all parties to cease military actions and exercise maximum restraint. He emphasized the importance of respecting international law, including humanitarian law, and protecting civilians and civilian infrastructure. The strikes have also posed significant risks to humanitarian operations in Yemen at a time when millions are in need of life-saving assistance. The attacks targeted infrastructure linked to the Iran-aligned Houthi movement, and a World Health Organization (WHO) delegation, led by Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, was present at the airport during the strikes.
