VisitU.S. Moves Over 1 Million Pounds of Aid into Gaza via $320 Million Pier, Part of Pier Collapsed
May 25, 2024, 09:22 AM
The U.S. Department of Defense has moved over 1 million pounds of humanitarian aid into Gaza via a newly constructed temporary pier. Since becoming operational on May 17, the pier has facilitated the transfer of 1.2 million pounds (820 metric tons) of aid, with 506 metric tons distributed by the U.N. Despite initial challenges, aid is now reaching Palestinians in need. However, the project faced a significant setback when part of the floating pier collapsed and drifted to Ashdod due to stormy seas. The $320 million project, built by the U.S. Navy, has been criticized for its construction and the difficulties in maintaining its operational integrity. Israeli restrictions have severely limited food deliveries to 2.3 million people in Gaza.
